The next step up from a total beginner’s digital camera must be something like the Samsung ST100 model. This is a mid-grade, affordable digital camera with some amazing features that you probably won’t find anywhere else. It has a 14.2 mega pixel sensor with a 5X optical zoom, plus it has an anti-shake feature that Samsung calls “Dual Image Stabilization.” It’s priced around $350, but you can find good deals online.
Like most new digital cameras manufactured these days, the Samsung ST100 doesn’t have an optical viewfinder. Instead, you have to look at the LCD, which is a wide, 3.5 inch display. It also has another LCD screen on the front of the camera in case you want to take pictures of yourself! Most cameras just have a single LCD screen that swivels around, but Samsung took it one step further.
Another interesting feature of this model is the “Children Mode.” When the camera is in this mode, a little animation plays on the front LCD screen with some music to capture a young child’s attention. It’s an ideal feature that any parent would want in a digital camera.
This camera also has a “Jump Shot” mode that lets the subject know when to jump in the air! It will take a few quick photos in a row so you can pick out a good action shot. Best of all, the “Beauty Shot” mode automatically makes people look more attractive by smoothing out their complexions.
If you’re new to the camera scene, just set the Samsung to “Smart Auto” mode, and it will quickly assess the landscape and choose the best settings for you. There are several other scene modes from which to choose. The Samsung is full of fun, easy-to-use features that will keep you playing with the controls long after you got “the shot.”
