Choosing a digital camera is an individual choice. The model that is best for you might not work for someone else. Before you start to look at different models, the first step is to take inventory of your photography needs. For some people, the price of the camera is the most important feature. Other people want high-end features like super zoom lenses or editing capabilities. Some of these features are even found on less expensive models, so do some research first.

Decide how often you are going to use your camera and for what purpose. Recreational digital photography users can get away with basic models, but someone who wants to sell photographs probably needs a luxury model with a digital single lens reflex (DSLR). Someone who is just learning photography may want to purchase a starter model to learn the basics of photography first.

Figure out what sort of photography you want to do. Lenses with wide apertures are good for portraits, but nature and sports photographs look better with telephoto lenses. If you’re not sure what type of digital photography you like, purchase a camera with a versatile super zoom lens.

As a word of advice, mega pixels are not the main determining factor of a camera’s quality. These days, most cameras have 10 or 12 mega pixels at the least. Entry-level, point-and-shoot cameras have these, too. Some so-called “cheap” digital cameras even allow the user to change the flash, light filter and lens!

If you can’t decide on a camera, read some reviews online to narrow the field. Well-known brands include Canon, Samsung and Fuji. You may find that the inexpensive cameras are perfect for you, or you might see a high-end feature that you really want to try out. Read the return policy to make sure that you can exchange the camera in case it doesn’t suit your needs.

Now that you have your digital camera, you need to know how to use it! Taking great photographs is more than just pointing it and pressing the shutter button – you need to set the lens, choose the setting and check the lighting, too. In fact, today’s digital cameras are loaded with features like auto-editing and auto-adjusting that even a beginner can figure out. Read on to discover the best digital camera tricks and tips to get the most out of your purchase.

Your camera should have an expandable memory card slot. Choose the biggest memory card you can find (or afford) and load it into the camera. The reason you need a lot of memory is so you’re able to take pictures at the highest resolution. You always want the “superfine” setting if you have it. If your memory card is too small, you will quickly run out of room on your camera – not a good situation when you’re in the middle of an excellent photography opportunity!

Avoid lopsided or tilted photographs by finding a natural leveling point in the landscape. Line up your viewfinder with the ground, the sky or a vertical tree so your photo doesn’t look “off.” It can be difficult to get a perfectly straight photo when you’re peering at the tiny, three-inch LCD screen.

Close Up mode, which is found in most digital cameras, is perfect for portraits and wildlife shots. There’s nothing worse than trying to show off your photo of a bear or moose that looks like a brown blob surrounded by miles of trees. If you’re out in the wilderness trying to get nature shots, set your camera to Close Up mode beforehand.

A polarizing filter is a necessity for every serious digital photographer. It makes the colors pop out and reduces flashes and glares in the photos. One little trick you can use if you don’t have a polarizing filter is to hold up a pair of sunglasses to your camera’s lens and then take the photo. It works best if the eyeglasses are high-quality and very clean.

The next step up from a total beginner’s digital camera must be something like the Samsung ST100 model. This is a mid-grade, affordable digital camera with some amazing features that you probably won’t find anywhere else. It has a 14.2 mega pixel sensor with a 5X optical zoom, plus it has an anti-shake feature that Samsung calls “Dual Image Stabilization.” It’s priced around $350, but you can find good deals online.

Like most new digital cameras manufactured these days, the Samsung ST100 doesn’t have an optical viewfinder. Instead, you have to look at the LCD, which is a wide, 3.5 inch display. It also has another LCD screen on the front of the camera in case you want to take pictures of yourself! Most cameras just have a single LCD screen that swivels around, but Samsung took it one step further.

Another interesting feature of this model is the “Children Mode.” When the camera is in this mode, a little animation plays on the front LCD screen with some music to capture a young child’s attention. It’s an ideal feature that any parent would want in a digital camera.

This camera also has a “Jump Shot” mode that lets the subject know when to jump in the air! It will take a few quick photos in a row so you can pick out a good action shot. Best of all, the “Beauty Shot” mode automatically makes people look more attractive by smoothing out their complexions.

If you’re new to the camera scene, just set the Samsung to “Smart Auto” mode, and it will quickly assess the landscape and choose the best settings for you. There are several other scene modes from which to choose. The Samsung is full of fun, easy-to-use features that will keep you playing with the controls long after you got “the shot.”

Right after you press the shutter button, the tiny mirror moves aside to let in the light. If you’re on the hunt for the best SLR digital camera, you may want to look at the mid-range line (priced below $1,000) for the most bang for your buck.

Canon is known for its excellent value in the mid-range line, but Nikon is also a strong contender for the champion title. Two excellent choices in this category are the Canon EOS Rebel and the Nikon D5000. Each camera retails for between $700 and $900 or less if you find a bargain. They both have 1080p video processing capabilities and microphones that capture every whisper. The best part is that these two cameras are HD video capable.

Critics say that the Canon T2i model has more “noise” in its photos when it’s compared to similar cameras. Another downfall of the T2i is that it doesn’t capture minute details in strong light. The interface isn’t exactly user-friendly, either. Overall, the camera is a good choice for someone who is ready to move up from a beginner’s digital camera.

Reviewers of the Nikon note that the camera has a top-notch sensor and an LCD screen that swivels for easy access. Like the Canon, the Nikon D5000 offers HD video recording. You can also set the camera to “Live View” while recording.

Canon and Nikon are good buys for someone who wants an excellent all-around camera at a bargain price. While these cameras don’t offer advanced video features, they are more than adequate for photography purposes. Also, other models in the Canon and Nikon line may offer the features you need at a lower price.

Panasonic’s new 2011 Lumix line showcases entry-level products with high-quality features. They include image stabilization for less blur and 720p HD video capabilities. Best of all, these cameras can fit right into your back pocket. There are two different models that have different resolutions: 12.1 mega pixels and 14.1 mega pixels with zoom lenses.

Besides the entry-level Lumix cameras, there are also midgrade models: the FH2 and FH5, each with 14.1 and 16.1 mega pixels, respectively. These cameras also have a bright orange option if you prefer to jazz it up. Slimmer Lumix models include the FP7 and FP5, which are sleek and smooth all around. The models have larger touchscreens, at 3.5 inches.

If you’re looking for a point-and-shoot type of camera, you might want to see if you can play with a display model first. Although they are geared toward beginners, even seasoned photog professionals can use a backup. The features are rich enough to capture good photos even without photography skills. All of Panasonic’s Lumix models have an “Intelligent Auto Mode” that is sophisticated enough to pick the most ideal settings.

Lumix even offers waterproof cameras in three different colors (orange, olive green, and silver). Research the “DMC” line for more information. They will work at depths of three meters of water and can also withstand some rough handling. Not only that, but they can recognize faces and take pictures in the dark, too. These cameras also have wide angle lenses so you can capture an entire landscape. CNET even gave this line the “Editor’s Choice” award.

In summary, the 2011 Lumix line doesn’t disappoint. It’s a good camera for amateurs that need something on-the-go. There’s something for everyone in this line, so check out the details and read some reviews if you’re thinking about buying one.

This camera is deceptively capable. It doesn’t look like much, but it includes a 3.5 inch touchscreen, a video camera feature and a CMOS sensor. It even has 12 megapixels for the sharpest photos. The special features of this camera include two different shooting modes: Superior Auto and 3D.

2. Canon PowerShot S95

Canon is a brand known for its quality. This particular model is no exception. Even advanced photographers sing its praises! It’s small, but has a wide-aperture lens and other manual features for professional photographers. Special features include an adjustable front ring. That means you can control the ISO sensitivity, aspect ratio and white balance.

3. Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5

This updated camera has a large zoom range, noise reduction and a new sensor. The autofocus is also better than the previous version of this camera. As for the video camera, the Panasonic has a 720p video at 30 fps and uses video codec instead of an inferior Motion JPEG.

4. Pentax Optio W90

The unique feature of this camera is its waterproof ability and rugged design. It can shoot photos at a depth of 20 feet and in temperatures of 14 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s an ideal camera for outdoor enthusiasts who want to get some brazen environmental shots without worrying about the camera.

Most digital cameras manufactured today have a video camera function. Even the cheapest cameras usually have this feature. The manual might not specify that you can use the feature as a webcam, but in most cases, you can. If you don’t have a built-in webcam on your laptop, you can easily turn any regular digital camera into a fully-functional webcam. These days, “webcamming” is a fun way to talk to friends and family who live far away. Having a webcam also allows you to teleconference with clients or employees.

1. Read your digital camera’s manual to see if it includes a video camera feature. Most of them do, and even include software. You can find webcam software online for free, so download it onto your computer first and set it up.

2. Plug in your digital camera to a power adapter. Video cameras use a lot of energy, and you want a constant source for webcam purposes.

3. Plug in a video cable to your camera and then plug the other end into your PC. Most digital cameras come with a cable. If not, buy one online that fits your camera model.

4. Position the camera near your PC so that your face is framed in the lens. You may have to set the camera on a shelf or a stack of books to get the perfect position. Position your face about two or three feet away from the camera lens to get the best focus.

5. Plug in a microphone to your PC if your camera doesn’t have a recorder feature.

6. Set your digital camera to “Camera Mode” or a similar mode. Open up your webcam software on your PC. It should immediately recognize the camera as a webcam and start broadcasting the picture. Your last step is to find someone to chat with, so have fun!

If you’re ready to join the big leagues, the Olympus E-5 might be your next big purchase. Retailing at about $1700, this camera is for the professional only. This SLR camera is actually an update over its three-year-old predecessor, the E-3, but it has a few more upgrades.

The sensor on the E-5 is better than the older model’s. It also includes a big, bright LCD screen that you can pull out and twist around to suit your needs. The LCD might be the best upgrade on the E-5. It’s bigger than the E-3′s and has better color and resolution. Like all good digital cameras, it also features a 720p HD video camera so you can tape all your Hallmark moments in a second.

If you have trouble holding onto your cameras, you are going to like the Olympus E-5. It has a special “finger groove” area and a rubbery-like finish that will help you grip it tight. Although this model protects itself against minor water droplets and dust, it isn’t waterproof, so leave it at home on your next beach excursion.

One new feature of this model over the old one is the “Fine Detail Processing” button, which automatically removes unwanted color and background noise in photos. Olympus also included a weaker optical low pass filter in the E-5, which theoretically should allow more noise to creep in, but it doesn’t seem to on this model.

Of course, the E-5 has settings for every type of weather, which makes it a good camera for landscape photographers. Choose from “Cloudy,” “Sunny,” “Flash,” and “Fluorescent,” among others. It will automatically adjust all the settings to give you the brightest and best shot. Save your money for this type of camera, because you are also going to want the tripod, case and extra memory cards.

Once you have a full memory card, or after you’ve spent a long day shooting pictures, your next step is to download them to see all your digital photos and start the editing process. There are actually several ways to download photos. Some of these ways include using a cable, a Bluetooth feature or a memory card reader. Most new printers on the market also allow you to view your camera’s photos directly on the printer and then print them.

Memory Card Method

One easy method to transfer your digital photos is to use the memory card. This is handy if you have lost the digital camera’s cable. Turn off the camera, pop open the memory card door and pull out the card. It’s about the size of a postage stamp in most cameras. Locate a memory card slot on your computer and push the card into it. Then, open up “Computer” on a PC to see an image of the card. Double-clicking on the card image will load all the photos and videos on the card.

If you want to move the photos to a memory stick, simply plug in your memory stick to the PC and open up “Computer.” Drag and drop the photos from the SD card into the memory stick’s folder.

USB Cable Method

The other way to transfer digital photos and videos is to use the included cable. Plug in one end into your computer and the other end into your camera’s port. Turn on your camera. Your PC should automatically load a window that will ask you what you want to do with the photos. If you choose “View Folder,” you can see everything that is on the camera. Right-click the photos and choose “Save As” if you want to put them in a different location on your computer.
